The Blind Painter

Difficult Beginnings

Once upon a time, in a small town, lived a young couple, Stanley and Megan. Stanley was a painter and sold his paintings at the market. But they didn't sell very well, and he struggled to earn money.

— I'm sorry, my love, but I couldn't sell any paintings today. Should I give up and work somewhere else?

Megan said nothing, for she knew her husband was trying hard enough for them.

— I understand, my love. Tomorrow I will look for a job. — Hey, Bruno, come on, boy!

That night, as Stanley lay in bed, a tear rolled down his cheek. All he wanted to do was paint, but life stood in his way, and he decided to yield to it.

— Darling, I'm leaving. — All the best, my love.

An Unexpected Tragedy

But Stanley didn't know that something terrible was about to happen to him.

— Ah! No!

— The accident could have been fatal, but fortunately, we managed to stop the bleeding. However, the optic nerve was severely damaged. I'm sorry, but he has lost his sight.

— W-what? No, no, Doctor, that can't be! Is there... is there no chance he can regain his sight? — Well, we could partially or totally restore his vision through surgery. It costs 10,000 dollars. — But, Doctor, we don't have that much money. — Ah, I'm sorry, madam, but the procedure is expensive, and we cannot break hospital rules.

Sadness enveloped Megan. She looked towards a future that didn't look good at all. In the following days, she scoured the town looking for solutions for her husband. She asked friends for help, called relatives, and even went to the bank to ask for a loan. All without success.

Back at the hospital, Stanley was horrified to learn he was blind.

— Oh!

A New Reality

A difficult journey was about to begin.

— Darling, don't you want to turn off the lamp? — It doesn't matter.

— I'm sorry, madam, it was rejected. — It's alright, leave it.

Having no other option, Megan took a job at a coffee shop to support herself and her husband.

Meanwhile, Stanley still hadn't come to terms with being blind. He struggled to learn orientation and mobility techniques, a method by which a visually impaired person learns to adapt their sense of touch.

— Ah! No!

Months passed, and sadness consumed him. What was he going to do with his life now? he often wondered.

— Ah!

A prisoner of his thoughts, Stanley had given up. Until one day.

A Spark of Hope

Suddenly, Stanley felt completely agitated. After so long, hope had appeared to him. He smiled, but then grew sad.

— Ow! — Bruno, I can't, Bruno, Bruno! Ugh! Where are you taking me? My easel!

Tears welled up in his eyes as the hair on the back of his neck bristled. Stanley didn't know what color he had picked up, but he didn't care. He just wanted to feel the brush caressing the canvas. He just wanted to smell the paint.

— Ah!

And then, the magic began. Euphoria, the feeling of eternal happiness.

— Oh, my God!

Stanley was speechless, but more than that, he was happy. In the following weeks, Stanley began to learn O&M techniques. He enrolled in Braille classes, started going out of the house, getting fresh air, and above all, he painted. Every day.

Stanley began to try various techniques to transfer his imagination onto the canvas. Eventually, he used adhesive tape as helpful guides, thus giving free rein to his imagination.

— Wow! This is so beautiful! No offense, but you've never painted anything this beautiful before. — I haven't seen the world like this before. It's... it's as if my mind has become more colorful than it ever was.

The Painting Competition

— Meg? Megan? Where are you going? — To sign you up for next week's painting competition. — Ah, come on, I couldn't. — Stanley, the result doesn't matter. Your participation does.

Megan signed Stanley up for the "Through Your Lenses" painting competition.

— You can paint anything you want. Just remember: you have six days. We need to present it on Sunday.

Stanley remained silent, because deep down he knew Megan wanted him to win the competition, and for the prize money to help him regain his sight.

— I know what you're hoping for, but... my love... — Focus on the painting.

The next day, Stanley stood in front of his easel, thinking about what he should do. By afternoon he started to become anxious, and by evening he had given up.

— I have no idea what I want to paint, let alone participate in the competition. — Do you know why you started to get excited about painting again? For the first time, you didn't think about the result, but you enjoyed the act itself. That's all you need to do, my love.

Stanley knew Megan was right. So, the next day, Stanley began his painting without further worries.

— Ah!

As he continued, he realized that he wasn't just painting; he was part of the painting itself. As if it were a road leading him to a beautiful destination. And so, five days passed, and Stanley's painting was finally ready.

— Wow! Stan, I hope one day you can see what I'm looking at now! It's enchanting!

Megan sent the painting on her way to work, and then, they waited.

Victory and Sacrifice

— Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Queensport's biggest painting competition, "Through Your Lenses"! We are thrilled you participated, and finally, we have narrowed it down to two paintings that impressed our judges: "Enigma" by Russell Davis and "Eyes of the Mind" by Stanley Keen. The winner is... "Eyes of the Mind" by Stanley Keen!

— My love, you did it!

The crowd applauded, but when Stanley stepped into the middle, everyone was shocked.

— Hello. I am Stanley. — Ah, you mean you painted that? — Yes, madam. — Lies! A blind person cannot do such a thing. It must have been painted by someone else.

— Excuse me! My husband may be blind, but he is not a cheat! — I don't believe it! You? I should have been the grand prize winner, not this man!

— Mr. Stanley, if this was done by someone else... — I shouldn't be disadvantaged because of my lack of sight. If you think I am unworthy because of this disability, then you can take the prize.

— I'm sorry. I sympathize with you, but not at the cost of the prize I deserve. If you truly made it, then I challenge you! Create something, right here, right now, in front of everyone!

— I accept your challenge. I need some adhesive tapes and a canvas.

The people present waited, while Stanley painted for the next few hours. And when he finished...

— It's ready.

When the easel was turned around, everyone was shocked and embarrassed. Especially Russell.

— What? Do you still have doubts, Mr. Russell? — I... I don't know what to say. I'm sorry. I never... I never imagined someone playing with shades without seeing. You truly deserve first prize.

— And forgive us too, Mr. Stanley, for doubting you. You have shown us today that where there is a will, one can do anything.

Stanley received first prize, and everyone congratulated him. Megan was happy, as her husband would regain his sight. But while talking to the people there, Stanley learned that the reason Russell was so desperate to win the competition was that he needed money for his father's surgery.

— Hey, you deserve it more. — What? No, I don't understand. — We need money for me to regain my sight, but it's not more important than a father's life. Take it. I insist. — No! Thank you! You are not just a great artist, but also a great man!

— I promise you, one day I will give it back to you.

Russell rushed to the hospital, where sad news awaited him.

— No!

The doctors could not save his father. It was too late.

New Eyes, A New Perspective

— Doctor, I would like to donate my father's eyes to a patient.

— Hello? — Mr. Stanley Keen? On the phone. I'm from Metro Queensport Hospital. We've found you a donor, and it's absolutely free.

— Huh? Ha!

What followed, Stanley and Megan went to the hospital, where the surgery took place, and after a few hours when the bandages were removed...

— I... I see! Megan! Oh... I can see you!

And at that moment, Russell entered.

— Hello, I'm Russell. Here's the money you gave me. — I... I don't understand. — You needed them for your father. You have his eyes now. — Was it you? Was it you?

Tears choked Stanley's eyes, holding Russell's hand.

— I'm sorry. — You don't have to be. What you did for me at the competition was something I'd never seen before. You tried to save my father, but we couldn't. At least his eyes can now see the world through your mind.

And so, ends this beautiful story, a story that teaches us the power of will and determination, and also the value of kindness and compassion towards others. What a person can achieve when they choose humanity above all else.
